ग़ज़ल

Ghazal

Couplets that stand alone, tied by a refrain.

हर शेर अपनी राह चलता है।

A ghazal is a run of couplets, called sher, each one complete in itself, sharing a rhyme and a repeating phrase at the end of the line. It came into Hindi from Urdu and Persian, and poets like Dushyant Kumar have used it for everything from love to protest.

Anatomy of a ghazal

Sher: one couplet that stands on its own.

Radif: the phrase that repeats at the end of the second line of every sher.

Qafia: the rhyming word just before the radif.

Matla and maqta: the opening sher, where both lines carry the rhyme, and the closing sher, often with the poet's pen name.
